Pa & Ma
As a kid, I have always wanted to be a lawyer, following the footsteps of my parents. Besides, I have always thought that it'll be cool wearing the blazer, walking around Court with Court heels, arguing, standing up for my client's rights...you get the picture. I would put on my mum's blazer (which was 10 times my size back then) and wear her Court heels and sashay around her office whenever I was bored. School was just 10 mins away from her office. I was there most of the time running in and out, sleeping on the sofa in my dad's room, playing computer games, doing homework, etc..
Then, as I entered the acne-popping stage, I told myself that I was really childish back then because the only reason I wanted to be a lawyer was to wear the zebra-looking uniform (black and white, in other words). Relatives and friends would ask me on my ambition and within a nano-second, I would say "LAWYER". And they will ask
"But why? Don't you have enough lawyers in your family? Another cousin of yours is also a lawyer" or "Is the Leong clan breeding lawyers? ONLY lawyers?"
*sigh*
And of course, I would say "Don't know" but what I actually meant was
"LOOK, someone has to take over my parents' firm someday. And I would take up that responsibility. I think its fun to do criminal law anyway. Pa brings back pictures of dead bodies most of the time and I'll be the one doing all the highlighting for him. I think its interesting. Plus, I enjoy talking. Talking is my passion. Lawyers talk A LOT. And I will always be able to tell when someone is lying. Try living with my parents and you'll know what I mean!"
After SPM, I insisted to do my degree in law but my dad said that I'll need to study locally and I was like
"WHAAATT?? NOOOOO!!! But paa....... I want to complete my law degree in UK"
"When you come back to practice law, you'll need to sit for your CLP examination and the passing rate NOW is already so high, by the time you graduate it'll be even HIGHER. You'll not want to resit for that CLP examination if you've failed once"
"I'm your daughter, I can do it. It's in my genes."
*dad smacks forehead*
And I would go to my mum and tell her about it and she'll say, that he's right. And, criminal law is quite heavy for a girl. Being stubborn headed, I told her that I'll do what I want.
Few weeks later, for some weird reasons, after being persistent for almost my entire life, I finally decided to do a degree in Accounting and Finance.
"Alright pa, now that I'm not doing my law degree, I want to further my studies in UK"
At the beginning of the semester, I was pretty eager to study Law in Business. After studying that subject for the past 13 weeks, all I can say is "Thanks Pa!"
I finally found the real definition of murder, LAW!
